April 5: Armed with Knowledge and a vibrant Curiosity!

Monday, April 5, 2021 at 7:00:00 PM Online event , ,

Have any of you read the D&D novels? Would you like to? I have read only Forgotten Realms books so far, but I have really enjoyed finding out so much background and detail from the cities of Faerun. Only, I dont have anyone to talk about all of this with, and I would like to start building a group- if anyone is interested. I will create a discord server to run this. Here's the Wikipedia list of settings and then their individual title catalogs. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons_(novels)

April 4: Beginner Class- Added a Discord Invite!

Sunday, April 4, 2021 at 2:00:00 PM Online event , ,

I think there are two logical formats that this event could take on in order to help people learn. One is having random people every week, like an open class. The other is a beginner friendly campaign where I try to hold on to the same people every week. The latter will benefit about four people. The former will allow many others to participate, and honestly that might work better for me while I am learning to DM. Game starts at 2:00. Be early. I have made my own pregenerated characters. Pick one based on who you are as a person. Your own natural talents will feed into role playing better that way. In order to find a group for yourself, go to the individual facebook pages of the gaming shops around town. That is an effective way of joining a table that needs players. Look for their extra pages called LFG (Looking for group) or RPG (Role Playing Game). Meetup is kind of a fluid hub of info, made up of players, but we are busy and our membership is ever changing. This may not be the only place that you need to go in order to connect with other players. Downtown: Level One Gameshop and Pawn & Pint Lee's Summit: Pulp Fiction Comics Independence: Game Cafe Overland Park: Tabletop Games I don't know if Liberty or Lawrence have a shop. If they do, I have not been there personally, and can't vouch for their D&D supplies. I feel like someone needs to get brave and open a St. Jo shop. There are enough random people seeing this for me to want to throw out advice or discussion topics in this space. So this week's advice- Quit the group if your DM seems like a narcissist. There is such a thing as a toxic DM. If you are still reading this long post, inexperienced players- -5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons -Meaningful story>mindless combat -Bring a sensible amount of maturity and consideration for teammates, (show-offs are amusing once or twice, but stupidity shouldn't be encouraged in the long run) -Have a pencil and dice Buy a Player's Handbook. This is vital. If you want to learn more about the D&D universe, there are several console and PC games available. I play Neverwinter. This will give you visuals of the classic places and races of the settings. The Forgotten Realms specifically. I recommend looking up the novels, either online (ebooks) or through the library (hardcover). This will give you more in depth knowledge on the cultures and typical personalities of the races. Wikipedia has lists of all of the novels. Pick one trilogy from one setting and go from there. You can use the website D&DBeyond to get started. It does the math for you and tells you some spells to choose from, but they intentionally exclude certain options in order to make you pay for the service- so not all of the races/subclasses/spells are available. Make sure to use the website for D&DBeyond. Apparently, the app is specifically for source books, if you have paid for access to any. I know this is rude AF but honestly please, if you are not new to D&D (you learned everything there is to know about d&d through podcasts or you played earlier editions and just want someone to teach you 5th Edition) this class isn't for you. I am trying to teach people that genuinely do not understand how all of this works, and need to have the etiquette and the story building and the mechanics and the technicalities explained. There are hundreds of youtube videos that will explain 5th edition.

April 7: Crafting resources for beginners

Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 7:00:00 PM Online event , ,

If you're new to d&d or RPGs or maybe even geekery (like I am), you may want some assistance in the crafting department.

It's easy to Google videos on ideas, and then never actually sit down to do any of it.

I took months to sit down and start making a d20 out of chain mail. Like, a one day project.

So what if we start a group for getting excited about completing our projects?

We can talk painting, or building terrain, or shares tips on where to find ideas.

I myself wanna start sculpting a cityscape from Styrofoam. It already resembles a map, so I need to add color and textures to make it usable.

DM/GMs welcome, players welcome, daydreamers welcome. It may take some time to accumulate some regulars, so feel free to cancel last minute or not show up. (We're all living through a pandemic, and I can just go play Neverwinter on Xbox. It's cool.)

April 13: Kansas City Game Designers - VIRTUAL Playtest Session

Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 7:00:00 PM Online event , ,

The Kansas City Game Designers group is made up of game designers and general board game enthusiasts who meet together regularly to playtest game prototypes and discuss various topics in board and card game design. Following best practices, we are moving our playtesting online. Join us on our discord server (visible after your RSVP). Playtests will utilize a variety of online tools depending on how the designer chooses to run their playtest. Possibilities include Tabletop Simulator, Tabletopia, Roll20, or Zoom. You can also choose to just hang out in the lobby and talk board game design!

Everyone is welcome, whether you're looking to design a game or just help playtest. For more info, visit kansasgamedesigners.com

April 13: Alternative RPGs!!!!

Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 7:00:00 PM Online event , ,

My friend John gets tired of d&d, so I would like to help him introduce you to ALL THE OTHER RPGS. Seriously. There's a whole world out there. World Wide Wrestling. Illimat (by The Decemberists) Various map building games, such as Companion's Tale. Ryuutama. Blades in the Dark. Band of Blades. Dungeon World. Monster of the Week. Dread. Mouse Guard. Stuff using the Fate system. Or using the Burning Wheel system. Or maybe just a basic d20 system. Go check out Powered by the Apocalypse or DriveThruRPG. John will probably run these on the weekends, but I wanted to post it on a less busy week day. When people are more likely to read this. He is willing to run something you're interested in, or play in your game too. His discord invite expires, but mine doesn't. Once you join, I will redirect you to his server. Thank you for reading, and have a great time!

March 29: Armed with Knowledge and a vibrant Curiosity!

Monday, March 29, 2021 at 7:00:00 PM Online event , ,

Have any of you read the D&D novels? Would you like to? I have read only Forgotten Realms books so far, but I have really enjoyed finding out so much background and detail from the cities of Faerun. Only, I dont have anyone to talk about all of this with, and I would like to start building a group- if anyone is interested. I will create a discord server to run this. Here's the Wikipedia list of settings and then their individual title catalogs. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons_(novels)

March 28: Beginner Class- Added a Discord Invite!

Sunday, March 28, 2021 at 2:00:00 PM Online event , ,
