April 10: SE Gamers at Gusto's

Friday, April 10, 2020 at 5:00:00 PM Gusto Coffee Bistro 3390 SW Fascination Dr, Lee's Summit, MO

OK folks, this is now a standing Meetup every Friday evening. I've put it as far out in the calendar as the schedule will allow. Although you can count on this event being scheduled, please do RSVP if you plan to attend. It signals to others that people are coming (more to the point, a lack of RSVPs may cause n00bs to think no one is going).

April 5: Beginner Class- depending on how things go, I may hold this at my Apartment

Sunday, April 5, 2020 at 2:00:00 PM Level One Game Shop 400 Grand Blvd #420, Kansas City, MO

Right now, I have 4 regular players, and I consider that to be perfect. When new people wander in, the regular players sit for an hour waiting for them to create a character, which isn't fair.

New players need to show up at 1:00 to nail down details of their character, so that we can start at 2:00, or I'm going to start handing people pregenerated characters.

In order to find a group for yourself, go to the individual facebook pages of the gaming shops around town. That is an effective way of joining a table that needs players. Look for their extra pages called LFG (Looking for group) or RPG (Role Playing Game). Meetup is kind of a fluid hub of info, made up of players, but we are busy and our membership is ever changing. This may not be the only place that you need to go in order to connect with other players.

Downtown: Level One Gameshop and Pawn & Pint
Lee's Summit: Pulp Fiction Comics
Independence: Game Cafe
Overland Park: Tabletop Games

I don't know if Liberty or Lawrence have a shop. If they do, I have not been there personally, and can't vouch for their D&D supplies.

There are enough random people seeing this for me to want to throw out advice or discussion topics in this space.

So this week's advice- In order to build a functional group, all of the player characters have to be in the same category of power and strength. The basic character build is a classic Race from the player's handbook+an original 5E class. That is the kind of build that a new player should be working with, since there are a lot of complications to work out just from those. Letting the players build whatever they want gets an imbalance in the players powers. Example: I wanna be a Skaven Bloodhunter (Lycanthrope) Fighter. Or I wanna be a Warforged Artificer. And all the other players are just like an Elf Rogue or a halfling druid. Trying this hard to be supernatural implies that you are bored with D&D and need to go do something else with your time.

If nothing else, the story and the connection between the characters aren't going to make any sense now because 3 or 4 people are from Faerun and 1 or 2 a-holes are from a completely plane.

If you are still reading this long post, inexperienced players-

-5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons
-I prefer meaningful story to mindless combat
-I would like to explore what it means to develop a character
-Bring a sensible amount of maturity and consideration for teammates
-Have a pencil, dice, a race and a class selected for your character

Races-Halfling, Elf, Dwarf, Human, Tielfing, Dragonborn, Half Elf, Half Orc
Classes- Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Wizard, Warlock

If you want to learn more about the D&D universe, there are several console and PC games available. I play Neverwinter. This will give you visuals of the classic places and races of the worlds.

I recommend looking up the novels, either online (ebooks) or through the library (hardcover). This will give you more in depth knowledge on the cultures and typical personalities of the races.

My characters start at level 10. You can use the website D&DBeyond to get started. It does the math for you and tells you some spells to choose from, but they intentionally exclude certain options in order to make you pay for the service- so not all of the races/subclasses are available.

Make sure to use the website for D&DBeyond. Apparently, the app is specifically for source books, if you have paid for access to any.

I know this is rude AF but honestly if you are not new to D&D, if you learned everything there is to know about d&d through podcasts, if you played earlier editions and just want someone to teach you 5th Ed, this class isn't for you. I am trying to teach people that genuinely do not understand how all of this works, and need to have the etiquette, the story building, the mechanics, the technicalities explained. There are hundreds of youtube videos that will explain 5th edition.

River Market is under construction. You will need to park on the east side of the shop. Or, if you don't mind walking, on the far west side of the market. Click here for event

April 5: Tabletop Sundays

April 2: Crimson. 5e Homebrew Campaign

Thursday, April 2, 2020 at 6:00:00 PM Level One Gameshop 400 Grand Blvd #420, Kansas City, mo

***TABLE IS FULL, NOT ACCEPTING NEW PLAYERS AT THIS TIME***

Welcome to Crimson:

Crimson is a post-apocalyptic D&D setting I have created for 5e. It will have some similar elements to Dark Sun, but it will not specifically play off of DS and all the mechanics and intangibles of DS. There is magic in the world, but it is not fairly common outside of the 3 cities and some of the more known encampments.

The world was once lavish with color, various greens throughout the fields and rolling hills in the backdrop, a blue sky that resembled an ocean with the occasional waves of clouds. The sun, a beacon of light and source of climate stability above. The very things many take for granted were always there and never consistently thought of. Farms flourished, animals plump with meat, fruits ripe for the picking and an abundance of fresh water and fish for humans, humanoids and all animals and beasts alike to eat until their hearts and stomachs were content.

Skirmishes were common throughout the lands as many others would feel throughout history. The Dwarves and their gadgets pushing the evolution of their time in comparison to the elves who seemed more primitive and regarded nature as a sentient being...a God if you will. Humanoids were in many shapes and sizes and in most instances stayed tucked away in their own nooks of the world. Defend when threatened, attack when greedy, align when needed.

The kingdom was controlled by the Berkhardt family. King Berkhardt, a widower who never remarried after his beloved passed away while giving birth to their son Prince Berkhardt. It has been rumored that he sucked the life force out of her and the 3 mid-wives who tried to help raise him from the milk of their breasts. 4 women deceased, 1 child alive. He was always a pleasant Prince. Gave to the people selflessly, always supported his father the King and went into numerous battles for the kingdom. The rumors were just fables created to craft a lore of fear and respect as many nobles have.

What seems to be a typical world became all but that. A rumble that resembled the hooves of all horses in the nation battering the ground echoed throughout the world. The soil beneath the feet almost boiled, popping and cracking in anger. Lakes and rivers turned to a gaseous steam, creating a sauna of heat that killed livestock, humans and humanoids effortlessly with pause or reservations to any of its victims. Bursts of crimson colors illuminated the sky. Lava geysers bursting creating molten rivers of slow rolling fire and ember trails. Meteoric rocks battered the lands, crushing civilizations, turning once notable trade centers to ruins. Greens turned to reddish brown wastelands, life turned to decay, the scorch became constant. The deafening screams of anything living faded, the silence thereafter was even louder as it carved out madness in the minds of rest who existed. The surface covered in soot, bodies that were once whole were heaped into a pile of ash as anyone and everyone who could burrowed underground, grasping and clinging to life support.

Is this the age of extinction upon them?

Sunday, March 29, 2020 at 2:00:00 PM Level One Game Shop 400 Grand Blvd #420, Kansas City, MO

I am learning to DM. So far, I am not a very good storyteller. I am learning to convey relevant details given by the adventure module. As I get better, I will wander into homebrew adventures.

So this week's advice- DMs are basically players too. They are playing the world/environment and managing the group, but they do this for fun. If you are busy not taking the game seriously and trying to act like a cartoon character, all you are going to do is make their job harder and wear out their patience. They aren't going to be having fun anymore. Don't be the guy that drains the DM of all of their fun.

I know this is rude AF but honestly please, if you are not new to D&D, if you learned everything there is to know about d&d through podcasts, if you played earlier editions and just want someone to teach you 5th Edition, this class isn't for you. I am trying to teach people that genuinely do not understand how all of this works, and need to have the etiquette and the story building and the mechanics and the technicalities explained. There are hundreds of youtube videos that will explain 5th edition, it has been out since 2014.

River Market is under construction. You will need to park on the east side of the shop. Or, if you don't mind walking, on the far west side of the market. Click here for event
