February 23: Beginner DM, Beginner Class

Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 2:00:00 PM Level One Game Shop 400 Grand Blvd #420, Kansas City, MO

I am putting together a group. I'm new to this DM thing, so I plan on spending a lot of time talking about the D&D experience and things that new players need to know because it's stuff that no one ever told me.

Look at this group like a class for new players. Those are the people that need the most advice and guidance, and I don't need any guys that have been playing for 20 years bringing their resentful snobbery to my table. Not all of them are like that, but enough have been and I don't want to put up with it.

So, new players-
I have played Out of the Abyss and Adventurer's League at Pawn & Pint, the 1st Edition homebrew "Neopolis" when it was held at the now closed Limited Figures shop, and the homebrew "Crimson" and Ghosts of Saltmarsh at Level One Game Shop over the last three years. I know what good DMs look like. But that doesn't mean that I am a natural actor or anything, so bear with me while I try to figure it out.

If you want to learn to play 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons, don't mind that I'm a woman who prefers meaningful story to mindless combat and endless junk piles of treasure, would like to explore and indulge in what it means to develop a character, and can handle bringing a sensible amount maturity and consideration for your teammates to a D&D group, then come join me. I have a lot of advice to offer. I can be an excellent source of information.

I will have pencils, blank character sheets, a PHB and Xanathar's Guide, a sort of lesson plan, a random collection of unpainted minis that you can substitute for your own (I can explain why I typically keep them unpainted), and I plan on starting with Tales From the Yawning Portal (the 40 foot well in the image above).

If you have learned the basics of how to play from Critical Role, that's great! But I am probably going to need to disillusion you of your assumptions. Real groups are not edited recordings of professionals. We're awkward. We're making this up as we go along. And D&D is meant to be collaborative, so no matter how much you have thought about your character you still have to share the time and attention of the group with other people.

All of that said- I hope at least four of you are still willing to let me lead you into a world of imagination. Thank you and hopefully see you later.

River Market is under construction. You will need to park on the east side of the shop. Or, if you don't mind walking, on the far west side of the market. Click here for event
