November 4: Codex Open Play League

Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 1:00:00 PM Pawns and Pints (new location) 613 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO

Join our master Game Guru Jared as he runs our ongoing Codex League! Codex: Card-Time Strategy is a customizable, non-collectible card game set in the Fantasy Strike universe that's inspired by real-time strategy video games such as Starcraft and Warcraft 3. Players each control three different heroes and have access to a tech tree that allows them to use different strategies each time they play.

The goal of the game is to destroy the opponent's base. To do this, players build up an army of units and heroes. Players determine the exact composition of their armies as they play by adding cards to their deck based on the tech they've chosen to pursue.

No experience is needed, and playing supplies will be provided. All we need is you! Compete for ranking, or just play for fun, there's no wrong answers in the ever changing action packed world of Codex!

November 1: Crimson. 5e Homebrew Campaign

Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 6:00:00 PM Level One Gameshop 400 Grand Blvd #420, Kansas City, mo

*****Table is open for 1-2 Players*****

Welcome to Crimson:

Crimson is a post-apocalyptic D&D setting I have created for 5e. It will have some similar elements to Dark Sun, but it will not specifically play off of DS and all the mechanics and intangibles of DS. There is magic in the world, but it is not fairly common outside of the 3 cities and some of the more known encampments.

The world was once lavish with color, various greens throughout the fields and rolling hills in the backdrop, a blue sky that resembled an ocean with the occasional waves of clouds. The sun, a beacon of light and source of climate stability above. The very things many take for granted were always there and never consistently thought of. Farms flourished, animals plump with meat, fruits ripe for the picking and an abundance of fresh water and fish for humans, humanoids and all animals and beasts alike to eat until their hearts and stomachs were content.

Skirmishes were common throughout the lands as many others would feel throughout history. The Dwarves and their gadgets pushing the evolution of their time in comparison to the elves who seemed more primitive and regarded nature as a sentient being...a God if you will. Humanoids were in many shapes and sizes and in most instances stayed tucked away in their own nooks of the world. Defend when threatened, attack when greedy, align when needed.

The kingdom was controlled by the Berkhardt family. King Berkhardt, a widower who never remarried after his beloved passed away while giving birth to their son Prince Berkhardt. It has been rumored that he sucked the life force out of her and the 3 mid-wives who tried to help raise him from the milk of their breasts. 4 women deceased, 1 child alive. He was always a pleasant Prince. Gave to the people selflessly, always supported his father the King and went into numerous battles for the kingdom. The rumors were just fables created to craft a lore of fear and respect as many nobles have.

What seems to be a typical world became all but that. A rumble that resembled the hooves of all horses in the nation battering the ground echoed throughout the world. The soil beneath the feet almost boiled, popping and cracking in anger. Lakes and rivers turned to a gaseous steam, creating a sauna of heat that killed livestock, humans and humanoids effortlessly with pause or reservations to any of its victims. Bursts of crimson colors illuminated the sky. Lava geysers bursting creating molten rivers of slow rolling fire and ember trails. Meteoric rocks battered the lands, crushing civilizations, turning once notable trade centers to ruins. Greens turned to reddish brown wastelands, life turned to decay, the scorch became constant. The deafening screams of anything living faded, the silence thereafter was even louder as it carved out madness in the minds of rest who existed. The surface covered in soot, bodies that were once whole were heaped into a pile of ash as anyone and everyone who could burrowed underground, grasping and clinging to life support.

Is this the age of extinction upon a once flourishing nation?

November 1: Thursday Boardgame Night, At Feed Supply

Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 5:00:00 PM Feed Supply Market & Deli 504 NE 70th Street, Gladstone, mo

Good Thursday! We have a public place again to play board games at! Please bring your favorite board games, and your favorite people to play some games.

This is being hosted by a local business owner at their eatery, so the only restriction is please don't bring food or drink, as they will sell food to us.

Also note the hours are 5 PM to 10 PM. So please keep the hours in mind when planning your board games!

Finally the owner is keeping her place open two hours longer than normal just for us! In doing so she has asked our group to pay a small fee to play here on Thursdays. That fee is $75 for the group, we are asking for those that are able to please be willing to give $5 to a group fund to pay this fee. We'll be keeping a communal pot, as our numbers can fluctuate between 30 people to sometimes just 12 on these Thursdays.

I'm excited to see all of you again, and to play some board games!

November 1: Downtown Weekly Gaming Meetup!

Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 5:00:00 PM Paul & Jack's Tavern 1808 Clay Street, North Kansas City, MO

Show up when you can! You don't need to get here at 5pm to get in some games. Many regulars don't make it till between 6pm to 6:30pm. I you are going to come later, let us know so we can hold a spot in a game for you.

We will begin with lighter games that are quick or easily joined. Then we can break out onto some of the tables in smaller groups if numbers and space allows. Come teach us your favorite game or learn one of ours! We should have plenty of players for a few different games and enough time to try a variety.

Come hungry and thirsty!

There is may be an automatic 18% tip on all tabs, if not, please take into account the extra time servers are helping us out when you are tipping. Also, if you come to just drink water or soft drinks, bring money for a tip. We like this location and do not want to lose it.

We will be in the backroom. Just tell them up front and they will bring you to us. Click here for event

November 3: Hackmaster- Aces & Eights

Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 5:30:00 PM Level One Gameshop 400 Grand Blvd #420, Kansas City, mo

At this point, a fair warning is probably in order. In all likelihood you cut your teeth on another game system and have either picked this game up as a curiosity or plan to move to HackMaster as a temporary or permanent change of pace.

The more you play HackMaster, the more you will come to realize that it behaves differently than other games. For most games, having some preconceived notion of what to expect or background experience makes the transition easier. This is often not so with HackMaster; its fluid mechanics more closely models real-life than any previous edition (old or new school).

Here are some things you will find different about HackMaster than other games:

• You needn't ever wait for your turn – the whole game is based on the 'seconds' system, much like timekeeping in the real world. If your character wants to take an action or change his mind in the middle of an action, by all means, do it!
• Both shields and armor make it easier for foes to hit your character – they simply absorb damage and deflect blows, making your character less likely to be injured.
• Characters use an active defense (and roll to defend as well as attack) reflecting the fact that you would actively try to dodge a blow in combat, not simply hope your opponent misses.
• A low roll isn't the end of the world. So you rolled a six against that orc? Don't whine about missing until the GM rolls for the orc's defense. You still have a chance – he may roll a five on his defense.
• Going first and fastest is not always best. Charging into a group of surprised foes may be great for the first strike, but it may also be a way to find yourself surrounded if your allies aren't as quick as you.
• Being surrounded or even outnumbered is a very bad thing. A large group of orcs will be a tough fight even for high-level characters, when in other games this would be a cakewalk.
• Ranged weapons don't work quite as well in real-life (or for low level characters) as they do in most recent RPGs.
• Individual characters cannot do everything and no character is an island. You need a TEAM of characters with complementary skills and abilities.
• Each character class has a specific role. Fighters fight. Mages should be kept out of melee at all costs. Thieves should be ready to let the fighters take the lead in combat. Clerics are the party's support. Each role is important to party survival. Playing a thief (or worse, a mage) like a fighter just gets the character… and sometimes the party… killed.
• All the min/maxing during character creation doesn't mean a thing if you don't use your brain during the game. That spreadsheet that managed to save you 4 BPs on your mage/thief's Skilled Liar skill doesn't mean much if you try to straight-up melee a troll.
• In fact, there are no perfect characters. There is no chart that shows you how to pick the best skills or choose the best weapon – it's all a matter of preference.
• 3d6 in order does NOT mean you usually get an unplayable character – HackMaster drags the average 3d6 character ability back to 10-11 from 15-16.
• Intelligence is important in melee – it increases your chance to hit an enemy. That's why the stupid giant can be defeated by the clever warrior.
• You can never tell the outcome of a battle before it starts. Just because your fighter is at full hit points, killing that goblin with the spear is never a sure thing.
• Simply because you've encountered goblins/kobolds/zombies in other games doesn't mean they're just as easy to defeat in HackMaster.
• The GM is not out to kill you – he's out to kill you if you are foolish.

In the end, the best advice I can give you is that HackMaster is a game of difficult choices. You will never have enough building points to buy everything you want. There is no one 'no-brainer' weapon that every combatant should use. The BEST advice is to just play the game with an open mind. Nothing brings out the genius of HackMaster like actual play.

November 3: 5th Edition D&D Campaign at Pawn and Pint

Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 11:00:00 AM Pawns and Pints (new location) 613 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO

Please note the new location for Pawns & Pints !

This is a cross-posting from the Dungeons and Dragons Meetup group.

What is a "game store" campaign you may ask ? This is a less serious option than a "long term" campaign - players are expected to come and go between weeks as needed - hence there is a large number of "pre-generated" characters available. If you are regularly playing (and have shown at least a commitment to show regularly) - then you may create your own character using our house-rules.

We run every week (unless specifically stated) and start from 11am and play until around 4.30pm. We usually break for 30 minute for lunch.

If you are new to the hobby - this is an ideal game for you. We are very welcoming and have different players of all types of experience. We rarely, if ever, turn players away - HOWEVER, you DO need to be at the location at least 30 minutes prior to start - as we need to find you a character and help you understand the house rules ! I'm usually at our location around 10am or so, and this is usually the ONLY reason players might not be able to play !!

We encourage support of our hosting game-store by offering one free re-roll if you spend at least $5 on the day at the game store. Snacks/drinks are included in that. If you've never played 5th Edition - but are used to 1st/2nd/3rd Edition - its exactly like 1st edition ! Very simple character sheets - the rules are incredibly easy to pick up ! Its really, really easy for new players to also pick up in one session - this is definitely the game for everyone !

I do reserve the right to "cap" the table size if we get too large. We have had table-sizes of up to 10-12 players, but any larger and we become too rowdy !

Players are free to this event only. If you wish to stay to play boardgames, there is a $5 fee for non-members.

November 3: 5th Edition D&D Campaign

Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 11:00:00 AM Pawn & Pint 221 Southwest Boulevard, Kansas City, MO

Cross-posting from another group for Jon Steel. =) Original event is here:
http://www.meetup.com/dnd-1121/events/205383112/

Join us in a regular 5th Edition D&D Campaign! After much thought, I decided not to follow the Adventurers League adventures for my campaign - instead, I have converted my original 1st Edition campaign to 5th Edition, and will be running this as a "game store" campaign.

What is a "game store" campaign you may ask ? This will be less serious than a "long term" campaign - players are expected to come and go between weeks as needed. Players own their characters - but the characters will be pre-generated prior to the adventure. Hopefully this all equates to "more fun" !

This session will be weekly (unless specifically stated) - and will last 5 hours each week (finishing at 4pm). Please ensure that you support our hosting game-store by purchasing snacks/drinks/game materials if possible at the game store - the space is free after all !

If you've never played 5th Edition - but are used to 1st/2nd/3rd Edition - its exactly like 1st edition ! Very simple character sheets - the rules are incredibly easy to pick up ! Its really, really easy for new players to also pick up in one session - this is definitely the game for everyone !

I'm going to reserve the right to "cap" the table size if we get too large. I can handle up to 10-12 players, but any larger and we become too rowdy ! More details will be forthcoming on table size.

October 30: The Wicker Man (2006) - What Happened?!

Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 7:30:00 PM The Buffalo Room 817 Westport Rd, Kansas City,

Nicolas Cage in…
The Wicker Man (2006)

Tuesday Oct 16th 7:30PM
@ The Buffalo Room
817 Westport Road, Kansas City, MO

Maybe you're familiar enough to know about "a shark or something?" Maybe you've only seen "oh no, not the bees!" Or perhaps you've lived blissfully ignorant of this 2006 remake of the 1973 mystery/thriller THE WICKER MAN starring Nicolas Cage. This movie is so entertaining on its own just to see the lead performance, but we're going to add the jokes to ensure pure satisfaction.

Cinemasochists' What Happened series includes a presentation on the making of the chosen film, followed by a live riff performance in the tradition of MST3K. $5 cover, dinner and drinks served to your table from the Westport Flea Market menu. Movie and riff rated R.
